There ia a Daniel Canning that passed away in 2008.  It states that Daniel was born in NJ in 1944 and his mon was from NJ. This seems to fit.  A quiet gentle guy.

We were friends throughout high school, and I lost touch with him.

I was sorry to hear about his passing.
